this is the first of her incarnations that shows any sign of recognising other people are real. usually the Master tends to think of everyone not him as cardboard backdrop.
proud and brittle and angry isn't exactly new, but there's never been anything underneath it but a black hole of ego.
she got quite pissy when i invoked Bechdel's law, but i think I had to.
to be honest, it was a purely panic reaction at first. it was an instinctive guarding of my vulnerable places.
he really isn't that, not any more, but old habits die hard. and besides, he is that for her. so i'll chalk that one up to me having good instincts because you're dead right. we'll never be friends if he's the axis we revolve around.
and I am damn well being her friend whether she likes it or not.
[shiva has other shit going on. she isn't even sure she wants barbara to see her under these circumstances, and barbaras who weren't hers have been here before. but when the name comes up in the network directory, she takes pause. after a long, long moment, she finally sends a text, a code she hasn't had reason to use in months and months. a careful measure--if it's the barbara she knows, it will mean something to her.]
[Barbara has started studying the network, but hasn't interacted, because she doesn't use any tech she hasn't hacked yet. The last thing she expected was a message.
For a moment, she just stares at it. It would be easy to feel exhilarated, downright giddy with relief, with hope, but that's dangerous. There are people here with all sorts of powers. The government knows her identity.
This could could so easily be a trick, could put her - or Cassandra, if she's really here - in danger.
Finally, she settles on something relatively safe.]
[after a moment's hesitation, she sends a GPS pin, just outside of de chima.
shiva has work to do. but right now that almost doesn't matter to her. and even if she's been thinking quite a bit since her ascension about her connection with the woman who shares her namesake...
barbara is family. and right now that's something shiva doesn't have much of. so as busy as she is, in this moment? this still takes precedence.]
The manor. Um, I can--call you a car? Or come to you?
Don't think so. His Nygma was here, kind of... enabled him. They were-- [look she's gay but she still doesn't really want to think about that relationship. cass waves a hand.] Different now. Don't think he... remembers before. But still. He's... trying something. Old tricks. Had Jason check it.
look if cass messages her let's just assume it's encrypted, voicemail; 10/7
Barbara, I-- [fuck. fuck. yeah, she knows she doesn't sound great, but she's been crying, so whatever. downside: it's probably not hard to tell she's been crying. she's off video for a reason, not that it particularly helps. she managed to mostly keep it together while she was talking to the other Cassandra, but--]
Laura's gone. I'm... I don't... [she draws in a shaky breath, letting out a humorless laugh that borders on a sob.]
