[She keeps her warden item on her at all times. Either it's stored in her chair with the rest of her batarangs, or it rests on her nightside table.

The first thing she does, after talking to Blight, is check it. Usually, it gives her a vague idea of the Emperor's position on the Barge.

But there's nothing there.

She swallows hard.]

[Private to the Emperor]

Emperor? [She refuses to lose her composure, but she doesn't hide anything, either. If what she suspects - what she hopes, desperately - is true, then it won't do her any good. She wants him to see her concern.]

Not for several decades, I'm afraid.

[They look exactly the same, down to similar plain shirts with a faint futuristic sheen, but the difference is clear on his face, in weary empathy, in the timbre of his composure, less concerned with itself, simply there.]

[The breath almost shudders out of her, and her shoulders relax.

He's not safe, but he's not dead, either.

[He glances down.]

I'm still having trouble believing it's real.

I understand that. [A slight grimace. The memories she has of other lives, other Barbaras - they're always fuzzy, distant, as nothing else in her mind is. But she knows enough.]

I don't - we're not sending you back there.

[He shakes his head, once. That's not his concern.]

Barbara.

Everyone I love is there.

[He will discover, in coming days, that he is wrong about this; his Sylvanas is here. But his escape is still worthless, on its own.]

[A slight smirk, wry and fierce.] What, you think I'd leave them hanging?

I think the last time I tried to change the status quo there, it led to that barge feeding on eight people instead of two.

Do you actually have any idea what you're doing, or do you just have a lot of heroic ideas?

[Her eyebrows arch. Really?] So far I've formulated six different plans from various hypotheses. The trick is determining which theories are actually correct.

[She raises her voice, just slightly.] It would help if the Admiral told us a damn thing. [She knows he can hear her regardless; she's just making a point.]

[Yes, really. He doesn't care if she's aggravated. If the barges were susceptible to well-applied genius and endless determination, neither of them would have lasted this long.]

I'm sure it would.

But we do know more than we ever did before.

I got flashes from him in nightmares, but they tended toward high on visceral horror and low on detail.

[A slow nod, as her brow furrows.] I wish we hadn't lost our best telepath. [Jean could help him sort it out, focus on what they need.]

If there's files, I can come review them.

[He imagines she's not so different that she hasn't generated and coded several by now.]

There are. [I bet mine are better than hers, she doesn't say.] I - you can come over any time.
