[Here is Barbara, looking distinctly irritated. There are dark circles under her eyes, and her hair is a mess. It's clear she's been paying far more attention to work than herself, and that she's in absolutely no mood.]

You know, it'd be nice if he got specific for once. "A problem". What kind of problem? What glitch, exactly, makes people able to communicate with us across time and space? Why can't we do this on a regular basis?

[Her voice is just dripping with disdain, now.] Should I even assume he knows?

[She takes a moment, reigns in the jagged aggravation.]

Any of you looking for answers - I'm sorry, but I can't give you any. I don't know why you can communicate with us. I don't know how it works. I don't know if you'll even remember this later.

We're a cross-dimensional rehabilitation facility. Our Admiral is staggeringly incompetent.

[Well, she's now completely startled out of her temper, well done.]

[She hadn't wanted to hope. It was cruel, to wave the possibility - infinitesimal, it had to be - of home in her face, of lost family and friends.]

[He squints at the screen. She looks younger.]

[All at once, her expression softens, and her smile is warm.]

It's - it's nice to see you.

...How are you? [It's a more earnest question than usual; she really has no idea. How far apart are they, timewise?]

[dost thou recognizeth the batgrowl, Babs? Because it's there, in full force.]

[She knows.

She could tell herself it's because of the whip-quick analysis her mind is constantly doing - first and foremost, the Bruce here wouldn't bother with the voice.

But maybe she just knows.]

[There's more emotion than she'd like, in her voice. She misses him and it shows.]

Likewise. [His smile is warm, and wide.] I trust you're well?

[Her smile turns rueful. She could lie, but it would be a pretty pitiful one, and - well, it's Alfred.]

I've been better.

[A slight quirk of the lips. Barbara hasn't always been his favourite person, but he respects her and the work she's done for Gotham.]

A ship - a barge, specifically. Seems to travel interdimensionally. [Can you tell how frustrated the word seems makes her? Because it's a lot.]

Sounds like you need a mutiny.

[ This is coming from a dude who is currently spending several years drunk at the bottom of the sea in Davy Jone's locker. ]

[ It's a long story, okay. But that's one big weird red dude, with a bottle of rum in hand, staring into a magic mirror talking to the hot red head on other end (he's got a thing for red heads, okay). ]

[Jason's been listening in on the various broadcasts he's picked up on, gathering information and piecing it together.]

[Her eyes widen, but just for a moment. Hey, one of her best friends is green.

Her smirk is just this side of vicious.]

[Her heart just about drops out of her chest.

It takes her a moment to speak, and when she does it's hoarse with emotion and she doesn't even care.]

Jay? Jason?

[The emotional in her catches him off guard, although he doesn't show it. He still plays it cool and casual but he is watching her very closely.]

That's me. You know, the guy who took a trip to the grave and then decided that whole dead thing wasn't for him.

What? [Her voice is strained with shock and - and so many things, she can't - ]

That - you can't -

[But he's older. He looks - she's imagined it, how he might look if he -

Barbara swallows hard.]

If this is some kind of trick I swear to God -

The only answer I want is whether it's a glitch on your end or ours so I know if I've gotta fix it or not.

Still, this is vaguely familiar.

Far as I can tell, it's ours, but it might be screwing with your systems somehow. It'd be best to check.

God has nothing to do with what happened to me. I'm no Lazarus but I did stop by a pit he might like.

[His voice becomes softer as he picks up that her emotions are genuine and she's not trying to bullshit him. This was the kind of emotion he had been desperately hoping for when he first encountered Bruce and was shown known of it. Seeing the lack of remorse in Bruce's eyes cemented his new destiny.]

It's me. No bullshit, no nothing.

[Her eyes go wide as all the threats die in her throat. That - it makes sense, maybe - ]

[What could she ask him?]

...Name something I taught you. A few things, preferably.

You taught me we wouldn't be having s'mores and sleepovers in my lifetime. Maybe that answer'll change now that I'm not a boy any more and that life is over. [Grins.]

You also taught me you have some prophetic skills when you introduced me to the phrase "jump the shark." We turned out to be a couple of shark jumpers after all. Your role as Batgirl got canceled, my role as Robin got canceled, and both by the same person.

I will. Worse thing that can happen is a computer error in a space shuttle half way between Earth and Mars.

Familiar like I've already talked to a buncha guys on some interdimensional prison before.

But I've been somewhere else before myself, I just can't remember the bulk of it.

[Barbara bows her head for a moment, biting her lip hard. She's not - no, not where anyone else can see her.

When she looks up, though, her eyes are bright.]

We pitched new ones, though, huh?

We did and I think out of our dysfuntcional little family, you're the only one who really gets why I took on this new role. You, me, and countless others still remain unavenged.
